Summer Hair Care: Protecting the Hair from the Sun

Summer hair care tips to protect the hair from the damaging rays of the sun is this week’s beauty question answered.

Happy Hump Day beauty and hair lovers! Today I am answering a client’s question whose hair I had recently colored with heavy highlights. She had not quite remembered a tip I had for summer hair care and asked me to post it on my beauty blog. As I am always obliging to my guests, I accepted her request.

Protecting the hair from the sun is imperative and often overlooked. People focus on protecting the skin, however it is equally as important to care for the hair and scalp in the summer.

Summer hair care is easy and keeps colored hair from fading, retains moisture and shine and protects the scalp from the sun’s UV rays. The following tips will help to ensure gorgeous summer hair while protecting your locks from the sun.

Summer Hair Care Tips:

  • Before heading to the beach or the pool, comb through a deep conditioner and tie the hair up. After a day in the sun, shampoo the hair following this all day deep conditioning treatment. Use a conditioner with SPF for greater sun protection.
  • Get regular trims, every 4-6 weeks.
  • Wearing a wide brimmed hat in the sun is not only fashionable and sexy, but protects the scalp, hair and face from the sun’s rays.
  • If you are not wearing a bathing cap in chlorinated water, (and let’s face it, who is?), then as soon as you leave the pool, rinse the hair with hose water to rid it of excess chlorine.
  • Take children to the salon to have chlorine treatments at least twice during the summer.
  • Use summer hair care products, such as the full line of Paul Mitchell Sun created to protect the hair while in the sun and manage it afterwards.
