Removing hair color with Dawn Dish Detergent is not recommended. Yet, some hair professionals and beauty bloggers still suggest the DIY home hair color removal. Today’s Hair Police has hit you with a beauty violation if you use Dawn Dish Detergent for the hair.

Happy Monday beautiful and welcome to Ask the Pro Stylist’s weekly Hair Police. This week I rant about a recent You Tube post that recommends removing hair color with Dawn Dish Detergent. I have written about the household product before when a reader asked if it is useful to clarify the hair. While in search of class material, I ran across this video that struck a nerve.

As you can see, Leighann wants to remove the purple from her hair. Her stylist recommends removing hair color with Dawn Dish Detergent. In the video the nonprofessional beauty blogger attempts to remove the color unsuccessfully.

Leighann is beautiful and touts a large You Tube following. However, the vlogger is clearly not a salon professional. If she were, she would know why the at-home treatment would not work. Consequently, her stylist is licensed and unfortunately is not armed with correct information. I am SMH at the video.

So, here is why removing hair color with Dawn Dish Detergent doesn’t work. Most, if not all, fashion hair color is semi-permanent. This means it lasts approximately 3 weeks (shampoos). However, the lighter the base and greater the porosity, the more intense the end result.

These colors sit on the outside of the hair shaft, between the cuticle and cortex. It doesn’t require oxidation, nor does it break the cortex to mix with the natural melanin. But the pre-colored dye molecule is large.

While clarifying shampoos will remove impurities and fade hair color they will not remove it. The deep cleansing can actually cause the pigment to push back further into the hair.

Since your fashion color is fading, visit a salon professional to easily remove it. Attempting DIY services at home will only further damage your hair. This video shows quick purple hair color removal using professional products. To conclude, removing hair color with Dawn Dish Detergent is not recommended.
