Trendy Prom Hairstyles: How to Create a Braided Fishtail Chignon

Trendy prom hairstyles are featured in this Tuesday’s how-to segment. Create a braided fishtail chignon perfect for prom or any other formal event this spring and summer.

With prom season here, finding the perfect look could be a daunting task, but should be a dialogue between you and your hairstylist. Here’s my rule of thumb when choosing trendy prom hairstyles or any other look for a formal event: strapless gown, hair down.

The braided fishtail chignon is one of many trendy prom hairstyles that have been posted by Ask the Pro Stylist. This pretty up-do originated out of Behind the Chair.com from Nick Stenson, JCP Salon Senior Artistic Director. According to Nick, this is an ideal prom or wedding hairstyle because it is “a little new, but still elegant and feminine, and a new favorite in the JCP Salons.”

  1. Comb all the hair to the nape and secure into a side ponytail.
  2. Subdivide the tail into two or three sections, depending on the hair density. Work a fishtail braid into all sections. Braid the hair 2/3 of the way down and secure with an elastic band.
  3. Starting at the elastic, slip fingers under each section of the braid individually and gently stretch the sides outward. Work up toward the scalp.
  4. Take the center and right braid and pin them into circular shapes in the back of the head. Loop the left braid into the center of the circle. Pin securely and create a figure eight or “C” shape, depending on the length. Tuck all ends under the band to conceal.
