Hair Trim, Haircut: They are Both the Same

Hair trim, haircut: they are both the same. Stop trying to get out of paying full price with the declaration that your stylist only cut a quarter-inch. But hairstylists also need to get on the same page. What’s good for one is good for all, or else you will be a victim of Ask the Pro Stylist’s Hair Police.

Happy Monday gorgeous, and welcome to Ask the Pro Stylist’s Hair Police of the week! Once again, I rant about the nefarious hair trim, haircut. Why do I find the term hair trim so revolting? Because, it gets thrown around too often, confusing the amount of hair that comes off with how much one should pay for the service.

Additionally, there truly is no difference between a 13-year-old’s hair and an 18-year-old. The only difference would be individually, for example one’s texture. A young teen should pay adult price. Salons could however offer “student discounts.”

The problem often arises when a stylist “gives a trim away” to one client, yet charges another full price. The price needs to be consistent across the board. If a stylist chooses to charge less, that should be a secret between the two. But, to be clear, a hair trim, haircuts should always be the same price. The procedure is the same for a quarter-inch off as two-inches off.

The pictures within are from the ‘Dolce Woman’ at Dolce & Gabbana’s SS 2017 Show by Redken Global Creative Director Guido. According to Guido, “This look is the ultimate Dolce woman: feminine, pretty, soft. We have some girls with an updo, some girls with their hair all the way down, and some girls with their hair half-pinned back. I’m using Wind Blown 05 in all looks to really emphasize that lived-in, personal texture. We’ve added flowers and headpieces for bit of glamour. Every girl wants to be a Dolce girl, I think.”

The steps to recreate the Dolce Girl are as follows.

  1. To begin, start with clean, damp hair.
  2. Next, apply a pea-sized amount of Satinwear 04 to damp hair to heat-protect and smooth.
  3. Then, blow-dry the hairline and part to smooth the top of the head. However, allow the length to dry naturally.
  4. On fully dry hair, spray Wind Blown 05 to add texture and grip to the hair.
  5. Pull front sections back and secure behind the head with bobby pins, securing the length in a small twist.
  6. To finish, use a curling iron in small sections to help add a bit of smooth texture and keep the look beautiful, natural and easy.
  7. Finally, apply a decorative barrette or headpiece for additional feminine glamour.
