Hair Care Advice for Curly, Wiry and Unruly Grey Hair

Hair Care Advice for Curly, Wiry and Unruly Grey Hair

Today’s Q&A offers hair care advice for curly, wiry and unruly grey hair, which was submitted by one of my readers from across the pond.

Whoop, Whoop! Happy Hump Day! I missed my beautiful readers. I haven’t written an Ask the Pro Stylist hair care advice or beauty column in over 2 weeks. I hope you all had a blessed Christmas, a happy Hanukkah and an amazing start to 2014.

This week Tina from the UK wants hair care advice for those curly, wiry and unruly greys that poke out of our scalps, and are oh so tempting to pull and/or cut.

Hi, I am 52 and have a real problem with some coarse, curly grey hairs (especially on left side) that won’t behave, and if they don’t straighten I have been CUTTING! Every time I try this it has left that side shorter but it’s become a real habit now.

PLEASE do you have any suggestions? At present I am using natural products that claim to straighten and soften so I cannot feel coarseness.

Much appreciated

Thanks for writing in Tina. Those pesky grey hairs are indeed obnoxious, however cutting or pulling them will exacerbate the issue. Avoid, if you can, consistently looking in the mirror to find and spot one, two or more poking about. Instead the following hair care advice will hopefully help you avoid the temptation to inspect and remove the little grey buggers.

And suddenly I find myself writing with a British accent.

First off, I love your haircut. The hairstyle suits you well! Don’t I have beautiful readers? From your photos I can see you color your hair, which should help to maintain the unruliness of the greys. My assumption is you are referencing the time in-between salon services when the greys pop up and become a nuisance. When this happens, do not pull or cut them out. This doesn’t stop them from growing back, nor does it create more, but what it does do is cause breakage and an uneven haircut.

Grey Hair Advice

Tina from the UK!

Visit your salon professional every 4-6 weeks for touch-ups and a trim to keep the issue at bay. I recommend using a shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair and Argan oil or my favorite, Orchids Oil from White Sands before and after styling for smooth tresses. A little bit of oil should tame the coarseness you described.

I hope my hair care advice helps your wiry grey hair issue. Also, check with your stylist to see what coordinating products he or she recommends that enhance the color line used on you.
