DIY Beauty: Fight Father Time with Products in the Home

DIY beauty is not just a passing fad. As prices increase faster than salaries in an economy where hardly anyone offers health benefits anymore, anti-aging treatments that are found around the home have gained in popularity. Add to that highly informed beauty consumers concerned with not only what is ingested, but also what is applied topically, and DIY beauty has now become a health and economic necessity.

Whoop, whoop and Happy Hump Day hotties! Welcome to Wednesday’s Ask the Pro Stylist’s reader question. Lisa came across my olive oil piece last week on DIY beauty and wrote in with a question for aging skin.

Hi Deirdre, I just found your great website and was wondering if you could tell me what I could use for dryness, sagging, and a brown age spot right below my eye that is in an area that is very thin and delicate. I was hoping that it could be DIY suggestions.

Yes, unfortunately, the eyes show our age, but I do have a few tried and true DIY beauty remedies that slow the process and alleviate some of what you are talking about, (short of cosmetic procedures).

DIY Beauty for Dry Skin

So, let’s start with some DIY beauty for dry skin. You can make a simple concoction of olive oil, honey and brown sugar, or sugar in the raw to exfoliate dead skin, tighten and tone and hydrate. Plain yogurt could also be used a few times a week as a 10-minute moisturizing masque after cleansing.

DIY Beauty for Sagging Skin

Cooled teabags, slices of cucumber, Preparation H and Visine all reduce swelling and puffiness as they tighten and tone the saggy and puffy under eye area. Nothing short of an eyelift will remove all signs of sagging, but the above DIY beauty are tricks makeup artists and models have used for years.

DIY Beauty for Dark Skin/ Age Spots

Lemon applied directly to the area lightens the skin. Ideally, Hydroquinone, either over the counter or in prescription form, lightens dark skin or age spots most effectively, but daily doses of lemon offer an organic DIY alternative.

My tried and true DIY beauty that begins from within is a morning cup of warm lemon water, which reduces puffiness and detoxifies the body. If you have a question similar to Lisa’s DIY beauty query, please email me at DeirdreAHaggerty@gmail.com.
