Cutting Hair at Home

Cutting hair at home advice was recently asked of me from a reader who feels salons ruin her hair. This saddened me, finding a professional to satisfy your individuality is easy. And unfortunately, it is comments like this that give professional hairstylists a bad rap.

Whoop, whoop, happy Hump Day hotties, and welcome to another edition of Ask the Pro Stylist’s Q&A. This week answers a reader’s question about cutting hair at home.

Ikram Bj Bj sent me this photo. She wanted advice on cutting hair at home to look like the picture. After a few questions back and forth, trying to figure out if her hair is cut to look like that, I discovered the reader doesn’t want to see a stylist because “all they do is ruin my hair.” Her hair has no shape with “an ugly straight line at the bottom.” Ikram then wanted to know if the style works for a round face.

I told her the hairstyle works for a round face, but if she is looking for instructions to cut it into this shape, I cannot do that. I never endorse cutting hair at home or coloring. If you don’t have long layers, you need them to complete this look. I can explain how to blow-dry it to give it volume, but not cut.

Precision haircutting takes education, a license and to be great, years of practice. However, depending upon where you live, I might be able recommend a stylist that will listen to you and follow what you want.

Cutting hair at home or any other service not done in a salon is never recommended. I understand, not every stylist fits every person. Personalities differ, as do training, experience, confidence and techniques. Younger stylists get nervous when layering long hair, and if the guest makes any sign of displeasure, the hairdresser will not complete the haircut as it should be done to result in the desired style.

But that doesn’t mean to give up and start cutting hair at home. This means finding the right fit through consultations and recommendations. There is nothing wrong with asking a stranger on the street where they got their haircut.
