Whoop, whoop, happy Hump Day and welcome to another Wednesday edition of Ask the Pro Stylist, where I put my best foot forward to answer readers’ beauty, hair, makeup and nail care questions. This week we cover a salon search and the best ways to find the right hairstylist or nail technician to fit your needs.
Hello my name is Shaquanna. I was reading an article that was basically a Q&A on gel manicures, SNS, acrylic, etc. I was wondering, do you know where I can find a salon or person who does SNS in the NYC/NY area. I’m here visiting from GA and currently have SNS on my nails now. They’re grown out. I’ve had them for 4 weeks now. I’m in Manhattan, in the city, but I’m willing to travel as well. Of course within New York City, not upstate areas. I’ll be using public transportation.
Another reader, whose hair-related question was answered not too long ago, is on the prowl for a good hairstylist/colorist in Orange, New South Wales Australia.
Thank you for your advice, I will definitely take it on board. You mentioned you might be able to recommend a hair salon. I live in Orange NSW if you know anyone, if not that fine.
As you could possibly imagine, finding the right place for either reader is a tad difficult as I am based on Long Island and one of the questions stem from Australia. Additionally, there are so many nail salons on one street in New York City that the choices are too vast to narrow down. However, I did offer each a little advice on their salon search.
Shaquanna’s question was slightly easier as she was willing to take public transportation and could get to Long Island in a matter of 30-45 minutes with the LIRR.
I do not frequent nail salons myself and prefer to do my own manicures, as I was trained to do so when I took beauty culture. However, I am a huge fan of nail art and I recommended two pretty famous nail salons on Long Island, whose nail technicians have worked for designers during NYFW.
Pink Nails is located in Freeport and not only do all of my hair clients get their nails done there, but anyone I see with fab nails has had them done at Pink Nails.
I also recommended De La Mer Salon in Bellmore; one because my best friend is an experienced nail technician that works there, and two, her co-worker is also phenomenal.
I also did a search for Shaquanna on the SNS website, http://app.signaturenailsystems.com/locations/index/zip:10001, and then simply advised her to walk into any nail salon and ask if they use SNS or Gelous nail products, if they do not, then find another, as nail salons in New York City are everywhere.
It was slightly more difficult to answer the reader’s salon search query that is from Australia. I originally told her to scour BetterFly.com, but when I checked the website, it has been revamped with a focus on online education. I then found Salon Search, the website, but without her zip or area code, my salon search for the reader from Down Under went south.
My suggestion for anyone in need of a good hairstylist, colorist or nail artist, is when you see someone’s hair or nails that cause you to pause and admire the work, take a moment and ask them where they got it done. People love flattery and will not hesitate to answer whom and where made them look good enough to have you stop to ask.
