New York Cosmetology State Board Exam Assistance: Cosmetology Tutor Information Update

Happy Hump Day!

Happy Hump Day and Happy Thanksgiving Eve gorgeous! As today is Wednesday, Ask the Pro Stylist is revisiting the weekly Q&A due to an influx of questions in my inbox. This week’s query comes from Leysan who needs a cosmetology tutor. Therefore, once again, I address the New York Cosmetology State Board exam. However, she is just one of many inquiries asking for help passing the boards.

Cosmetology Tutor Information Update

To begin, Deirdre Haggerty (me) aka Ask the Pro Stylist, NO LONGER lives in New York state. As such, I am NOT a cosmetology tutor. However, I can offer a few tips to find help to pass the New York Cosmetology State Board exam along with other states’ requirements for beauty licensure.

Read My Cosmetology Guide

As a licensed hairstylist and educator turned school director, beauty writer, and author, I published a quick guide to provide information on cosmetology licensing. My first book, The Future Professional’s Guide to Cosmetology: Is Beauty School for You?, is now on Amazon. It is available in both digital and print formats. The guide is a quick read with links to all 50 states’ cosmetology websites and exam information.

The paperback version of the free book (is not free)

Do All Cosmetology School Graduates Need a Tutor to Pass?

You do not need a private tutor to pass the cosmetology exams if you are a recent graduate with good attendance. However, if it has been more than a minute since you left cosmetology school and never took the exams, you might require assistance. Beauty schools worth their salt welcome back former graduates at no charge. Unfortunately, some schools are all about the almighty dollar, and charge a pretty penny for a brush-up course. In addition, some states require course refreshers if your education has been more than a few years. In these instances, I would call the state cosmetology administration or board and get the details on the requirements. Then, ask the state if they have a list of recommended schools.

Tutoring for Practical or Written

Some students are better in the practical format and not the written. And, if you’re honest with yourself, some students weren’t truly focused when in class, having maybe a little too much fun. There is nothing wrong with any of the above. Yet, we do need to pass the exams to get our cosmetology license in all states. Additionally, since COVID-19, some states are only requiring passing the written exam to receive a cosmetology license. Therefore, wherever you live I suggest the Milady Exam Review for the written and calling your old cosmetology school for assistance with the practical.
