Introduction

My time in the beauty industry as a licensed cosmetologist spans over 30 years. As such, I know a few things. Having been both director and educator for some popular cosmetology schools in the New York region, I believe I have a bit of insight to answer, “Is Beauty School for you?” The guide provides details about my expansive career and love of the industry. It explains how choosing the right school can impact your success and finances. Hopefully, it will inspire you to enroll in a cosmetology school or act as a yellow light to proceed with caution.

What You Will Learn in Cosmetology School

The Future Professional’s Guide to Cosmetology: Is Beauty School for You? is not a replacement for a textbook. Nor will it prepare you to be a licensed cosmetologist. It will, however, touch on all the aspects outside of your book and the practical work required to be successful such as professionalism and the outline of a typical school day.

Types of Schools

I touch on the pros and cons of private cosmetology schools, higher education that offers cosmetology and BOCES, Vocational, or CTE schools. This will give you an idea of the benefits of all, when to attend, and how the teachers are trained. There is a resource section at the end with links for the types of cosmetology schools each state offers.

School Policies

It is important to understand all higher learning facilities have school policies. From dress codes to attendance, every student signs off on school policies and a code of conduct usually during the enrollment process.
