New York State Cosmetology License Requirements
According to the Department of State, 1000 hours of NYS approved course of study are required to take both the written and practical examinations. In addition, you must be at least 17 years of age to apply for the cosmetology license. Certain fees and a physical are also mandatory. Click the above link for further information.
Why Deirdre Haggerty for Cosmetology Tutor
I am a fully licensed New York State cosmetology instructor, having taught in some of the best schools. In addition, I worked in salons as both a stylist and manager. Currently, I am in graduate school earning an MA in English.
Do All Cosmetology School Graduates Need a Tutor to Pass?
No, of course not. You will know if you need a cosmetology tutor the first time you fail either the written or practical. You can retake. However, when you exceed the limit you must keep paying the fee. Why waste your time when a tutor such as myself can help you pass in one try?
Some schools focus on their “way” and drop the ball in stable state board prep. Many teachers aren’t on the same page and consistency is lacking, therefore the message is slacking.
Tutoring for Practical or Written
Some students are better in the practical format and not the written. And, if you’re honest with yourself, some students did not truly focus when in class, having maybe a little too much fun. There is nothing wrong with any of the above. Yet, we do need to pass the NYS Board to get our cosmetology license to work in New York.
To be honest, I focus on the practical portion of the exam based upon your needs. Then, if you require a full run through, we could do that as well. I can help with the written, but I generally show you how to get the study materials via Milady and you can study on your own without paying me extra. You will need to pay for the study materials, which is separate. Finally, I suggest the Exam Review.

Due to the recent pandemic, I am only doing virtual classes right now via Skype or FaceTime. If you are a new student, a deposit is mandatory, using PayPal, Zelle or Venmo.
