Summer Shampoo: Should I Change My Hair Care for the Summer?

Yes, your summer shampoo and hair care regimen should change for the season. Actually, you should change your routine when weather conditions vary, health issues arise, or amid traveling, among other things.

Whoop, whoop, its Hump Day! Welcome to this week’s Q&A with Ask the Pro Stylist. During a routine re-touch, a guest asked about summer shampoo. Specifically, she wanted to know if she should change her hair care routine for the summer. While many are under the notion that your hair requires new shampoo every few weeks, most are unaware of the factors that contribute to the practice.

It’s not that your current shampoo has lost its effectiveness, but that other circumstances have occurred making it appear so. For instance, perhaps you are pregnant, moved to an area that uses hard water, traveled to another climate, are in a change of seasons, or simply have cut off brittle, damaged hair. These factors and other changes in the hair’s pH will cause your current shampoo to lose its efficacy.

If summer has arrived, you will need a shampoo and conditioning system to fight the humidity and consequently, frizz. In winter it’s best to hydrate dry and tired locks. When traveling, use filtered water to rinse your hair. And you should use a clarifying shampoo to combat buildup every 6 weeks or so…not Dawn Dish Detergent.

It’s always important to keep in mind the condition of the hair when choosing a summer shampoo or any hair care regimen. Your stylist will know best what products to recommend for your hair type. Color treated hair needs extra protection in the summer. Hair that has undergone a smoothing treatment requires sulfate-free or sodium chloride free shampoo. Because your beauty professional understands your hair and the services you acquire, he or she will know what to best recommend.
