Have perfect post-workout hair with hair care tips from Theresa Adams, Master Stylist at Dop Dop Salon in SOHO. The following will help you look like you stepped out of the salon and not like you spent your lunch break working out.

This Tuesday’s Ask the Pro Stylist hair tutorial is for the fitness fanatic. It comes from the legendary Dop Dop Salon of NYC with tips and tricks from its Master Stylist, Theresa Adams. Theresa has offered a few suggestions for perfect post-workout hair beginning with hair prep.

Before You Work Up a Sweat, Get Your Hair in Gear

  • Post-workout hair needs a little preparation for fabulousness. Use a cloth headband to keep hair back and out of the face instead of wearing a tight elastic headband that will cause a crease in the hair.
  • Be wiser with your ponytail. Use bobby pins or cloth hair ties instead of elastics to prevent the unwanted ponytail dent and avoid breakage.
  • Set the hair in one of the following and workout. Once released, the hair will have bounce, waves and texture. Create a Dutch braid, an inside out French braid at the hairline, braided pigtails or wear the hair in a high, twisted topknot.

Invest in Good Hair Care Products and Dry Shampoo

  • For perfect post-workout hair, Theresa recommends a dry shampoo such as L’Oréal Professionnel Fresh Dust, which absorbs excess oil and adds volume as it refreshes the hair.
  • L’Oréal Professionnel Volumetry Powder Fresh SOS Refreshing Spray is a pocket-sized hair tool perfect for the gym bag, which does the same as above, but is great for fine hair.

Post-Workout Hairstyles

  • After your workout, you probably don’t have much time to fuss. If you braided, or wore a bun, unravel the hair, spray the Dry Shampoo and brush through.
  • If your hair frizzed from the humidity of the gym or shower and you have access to a blow dryer, use it to get rid of excess moisture and then spray the ends of the hair with L’Oréal Professionnel Mythic Oil Reinforcing Milk to add shine, smooth out the ends and control frizz.
  • Add volume with pin curls if you didn’t get a chance to braid beforehand. For fine to medium hair, over-direct the hair up and forward toward your face and pin to get more body at the crown. For those who do not need added volume, divide the hair into 2-3 sections and create pin curls secured just above the ears. Let cool and set, then shake out hair.
  • If you prefer to not leave hair down, braids are always a great option. Pull the hair back into a ponytail or a roughed-up bun, or fashion a milkmaid braid: Divide the hair into two pigtails then braid and secure. Take one braid and wrap over the crown and pin then take the other braid and wrap over the crown and pin.

With these perfect post-workout hair tips from Dop Dop, you will feel refreshed and energized with oh-so-fabulous hair the moment you step out of the gym. Come back next Tuesday as we start the holiday hairstyle tutorials. Until then, happy styling!
