Home Hair Remedies That Naturally Fade Hair Dye

Are there home hair remedies that naturally fade hair dye to a more natural color? NO, NO, NO! Oh, there are items that will fade color, but it isn’t natural, will damage the hair and NO, just no! Stop with all this I want to do it myself nonsense because I saw it on the Internet, I don’t have enough money to go to a salon, I am impatient and cannot wait for my regular, and someone once ruined my hair and I don’t trust professionals any more.

Whoop, whoop, it’s Hump Day! Happy Wednesday hotties and welcome to Ask the Pro Stylist’s Q&A for the week. Based upon my opening paragraph, you might be thinking: Who pissed in her coffee? No one is the answer, but I am consistently asked today’s question regarding home hair remedies that naturally fade hair dye, which came immediately upon me responding to a similar one about black hair dye, and the topic frustrates me.

Hello, I have a hair care question about my hair. I’m going back to my natural hair color of sandy brown. I haven’t colored my hair in about 4 months. It’s dark brown and in the sunlight you can see the dark red pigment underneath. I hate it! My roots are very noticeable. How can I naturally fade this color to a more natural one using home remedies?

For those who might have just stumbled upon this beauty blog or haven’t read the about section, let me start my stating I am a hairstylist and I never recommend at home hair color or any chemical service unless completed with professional products and a knowledgeable, licensed stylist. There are great natural ingredients found around the home that will condition the hair, but nothing can safely and effectively break through hair color. It is just a simple fact. And neither could a box of hair dye. Color cannot remove color, only a lightener can. The ONLY proper way to accomplish this is in a salon, and not with any home hair remedies.

Now, some of you might say well, I went to a salon once and they ruined my hair. I’m not gonna lie. We all make mistakes. I do, I have and the very best of the best, and I mean ones that are flown to palaces don’t always do a great job, and trust me, I can attest to that. But it will still be better than what you could do at home with limited resources.

We all have bad days. There might be communication issues. The stylist might not be knowledgeable in what you need, or could be right out of school. A good dialogue needs to occur before the service commences, which offers the client an out if they aren’t comfortable. One rotten apple certainly doesn’t spoil the whole bunch, neither should an off day ruin someone’s reputation. And some of the worst newbies grow to be amazing stylists.

But, to return to Faith’s home hair remedies query, there really isn’t any product that will naturally fade hair color, especially without seeing the “red.” Red is popping through her hair because it has faded on its own, she probably has natural red undertones (I have not seen her hair, and am assuming her color is similar to the picture), and most likely has not used color protecting shampoos.

Last week someone asked about Dawn Dish Detergent to remove black hair dye. NOTHING removes hair dye, but lightening formulas from a salon, and definitely not home hair remedies. Clarifying shampoos and even Dawn will remove residue and dull the hair, but that color is there until it is either cut or removed professionally, especially if it is a permanent dye.

Sorry if I was abrasive. I am truly an advocate for the hair professional. We are underpaid and under appreciated, and I simply want to bring clients back to the salon and away from box brands of nonsense.
