How to Highlight Hair at Home and Look Like Beyonce

Do you want to know how highlight hair at home to look like Beyonce? The answer on how to highlight hair at home might surprise you and it will surely save tons of money.

Whoop whoop, happy Hump Day hotties! Welcome to this Wednesday’s Q&A from Ask the Pro Stylist where I make a concerted effort to answer readers’ and clients’ beauty questions. This week’s query comes from my friend Terri from Wisconsin who wants to know how to highlight hair at home.

Hello again. I don’t know if you can answer this question for me. I am currently unemployed right now so I may have to highlight my own hair right now. Is there a product you do or don’t recommend?

This was a tough question to answer. I really like Terri and I feel her pain. Money is an issue for so many people right now. Prices get raised, yet people are unemployed or don’t make enough to survive, yet alone enjoy the luxuries of getting a salon service. On the other hand, as readers are surely aware of at this point, I hate box or at-home color services that are purchasable in a local pharmacy. I believe they should be wiped off the face of the Earth, period.

So what was my answer to Terri on how to highlight hair at home?

Hi Terri! Sorry I didn’t answer sooner… busy week. Sorry about your current employment status. Believe me I understand. Unfortunately, when it comes to highlighting or any color at home, I do not recommend it. Here is why…if you damage the hair, make it orange or any other problem that most definitely would arise from coloring or highlighting hair at home, the cost to fix it in the salon is a lot more than what the actual highlight would be. My advice is to talk to your stylist/colorist about your financial situation. There are less expensive alternatives to a full foil highlight. You could do a cap, which some salons still do and it is not as costly. You could do a half-a-head foil, which again is cheaper. Or let your highlights grow out and rock the ombré look. I am sorry this doesn’t help-but I am not a fan of at-home hair color products. Let me know what you decide.

The current hair trend is a rooty-look, balayage or ombré, as seen in the attached photograph of Beyonce. Letting the color go a little bit in-between salon services would save money and be current. I have seen way too many epic color fails at home that have had to be corrected by professionals, which costs more money than the money thought to have originally been saved. If you want to highlight hair at home, visit a licensed stylist that has a salon in her house, otherwise don’t do it!
