Hair Color Help: Going From Blonde to Multi-Colored Highlights

Hair color help is this Wednesday’s beauty question answered: How to go from blonde to multi-colored highlights.

Happy Hump Day hair and beauty lovers, I hope you are staying cool during this heat wave! This Wednesday’s question comes from Steph who emailed me wanting to change her hair color to the one in the photo of Kelly Clarkson she attached.

Wanna make my hair like this. How do i go about it?

Hi Steph!

Is the color in your email photo the hair color you currently have? From the photo it appears you are a dark, dirty blonde, is that your natural hair?

The moment I received the hair color query from Steph, I shot her back an email with some questions, however, she hasn’t answered. Since my fingers cannot feel the texture of her hair, nor can I physically see her natural hair color, offering her any advice on how to go about changing her hair color to Kelly Clarkson’s multi-colored highlighted style would be most unprofessional. And, as readers of this column can attest, I would never advise doing hair color at home.

However, I do have some hair color advice to offer the reader. From what I could gather from her email profile picture, her hair color is a dirty blonde and appears thick in texture. Her bangs were long and there was a step from the bang to the back with no flow in the haircut.

Firstly, find a good hairstylist and colorist. If you don’t know of one in your area, I may be able to assist with that or if you see someone with fabulous hair, ask them where they get it done, people love to talk about themselves.

Then, take the Kelly Clarkson photograph to a reputable salon so recreate her hair color and style. Steph needs a healthy haircut, directing bangs to meet the sides and then with the back, but not too much as to create a mullet. Texturizing long layers in will help.

For the hair color, if dirty blonde is her natural hue, highlighting in a lighter blonde, a medium brown and a nice red will easily mimic Kelly Clarkson’s look. A good hair colorist will know how to add depth and color perfect for your skin tone and natural hair color.

Again, as I have always stated, do not color the hair at home, especially a detailed highlight such as above. If you have  hair color or beauty questions for me like above, please email me at DeirdreAHaggerty@gmail.com.

Happy Styling!
