Hair Color Advice And Hair Color Questions Answered (AGAIN)

Need hair color advice? Are you an at-home do-it-yourselfer mad about box hair color? Well then, you have come to the right place. Read on for more DIY at-home hair color advice.

Whoop, whoop its Hump Day! As today is Wednesday, it is time for another Q&A from  Ask the Pro Stylist. Once again we tackle at-home hair color advice and hair color questions for the do-it-yourself kitchen sink colorist.

The following are just a few samples of messages from my Facebook page or inbox.

Hi Deirdre,
I do not like to get my highlights and keratin treatment done the same day, as I must sit too long.  How long after I get a highlight do I need to wait to get a keratin treatment?

My hair color advice: Of course, you should ask your stylist as it does depend upon the manufacturer. However, 1-2 weeks is standard.

And the next 2 are my favorites, both home colorists. One woman admits to years of color buildup from at-home coloring. She even gave me her grey percentage, what level she is at and the lightness and tone she wants to be. Being that she wants to go lighter, she was wondering if Color Oops is OK to use.

GO TO A SALON!

Another says her hair pulls orange and wants to use Wella Color Touch, even giving me the formula. However, she is not a professional at all.

GO TO A SALON!

Both are readers that saw various question and answer posts, but possibly didn’t read further on where I give my advice. Which, I gave to them.

GO TO A SALON!

My students always ask when we first begin to learn hair color why I hate box dye. When they get to the clinic floor and start to take clients they can finally see my reasoning. At least once a week a DIY at-home colorist comes in for a correction.

They generally flock to cosmetology schools because a color correction in a salon could be costly. However, many schools avoid such processes as it is timely. In addition, the hair is so compromised that most do not want the responsibility of fixing what someone messed up at home.

As the students learn more about color, they too realize they’ve been playing with fire at home. So, my advice is only and will ever be –GO TO A SALON!

There are many inexpensive alternatives. Or visit a reputable cosmetology school. Prices are great and students love and need the practice.

If you don’t believe me, this photo was done by one of my students. Amazing right? She is a recent graduate. Visit Claire on Instagram @claireelizabethhair.
