Hair Buildup Help: Why Different Shampoos Weigh Your Hair Down

Are you in need of hair buildup help? A student wanted to know why, no matter what shampoo she used, her hair felt dirty. This week Ask the Pro Stylist covers dirty hair for the Wednesday Q&A.

Whoop, whoop, it’s Hump Day and time for another edition of Ask the Pro Stylist’s Wednesday Q&A. This week we tackle hair buildup. A future professional asked me why her hair felt dirty no matter what shampoo she used.

The student recently had her hair colored, and a lot of product was used to get her to the desired result, as it was a corrective color process. However, there are many reasons why the hair might not feel clean after shampooing.

This time of year water providers drain the systems, often leaving residue that comes out of the tap. Most residents, but not all, receive notifications to run the tap prior to washing clothes and brushing teeth. This is a very common reason hair feels dirty.

Hair buildup, or a feeling of a dirty scalp and greasy hair, could also be the result of hormonal changes, using the same shampoo too often (it is recommended to change regimens every 2 weeks), a change in seasons, thinning hair, and a change in nutrition, diet and health.

If you feel you suffer from hair buildup, do not use Dawn Dish Detergent, especially if your hair is colored. Use a professional clarifying shampoo and/or Malibu C, and rinse your hair with cool water. Avoid an excessive use of styling products at this time, as it will only exacerbate the situation.
