Braids for the Fourth: Braid Tutorials

Braids for the Fourth are an easy way to beat the heat and stay on trend. As a result, this Tuesday’s how-to features 2 braid tutorials, a Twisted Rope Braid and a Fishtail Pony.

Happy Tuesday gorgeous, and welcome to this week’s hair guide from Ask the Pro Stylist! Because the Fourth of July is less than a week away, this Tuesday’s how-to focuses on braids.

The first of the 2 braids for the Fourth arrive from Pureology Artist Sandra Joseph. She shares below her favorite quick up-do, the Twisted Rope Braid, which is perfect for your summer cookout.

  1. First, create shape and volume with Pureology Smooth Perfection Shaping Control Gel.
  2. Divide the hair into 2 sections; yet allow a few strands to frame the face.
  3. Next, add Pureology Colour Stylist Anti Breakage Twist shine texturizer.
  4. While holding a section of hair in each hand, twist both sections to the right until all of the hair is twisted.
  5. Cross the right strand over the left, and continue this pattern until the rope braid forms.
  6. Tease the ends and secure with an elastic band.

Finally, the second of braids for the fourth come from Ariba Pervaiz of Latest-Hairstyles.com. According to Ariba,”This look combines a French fishtail with a more traditional braid, making it super versatile and easy to play around with, depending on your style. For a more polished look, smooth out the sides. In this tutorial, I went with a more laid-back, messy look, by working with my flyaways instead of concealing them!” Most noteworthy, an important video tutorial follows after the step-by-step guide for the visual learners.

  1. To begin, take a small section of hair from the hairline and split it into two equal halves. Cross the right section of hair over the left.
  2. Next, take a new piece of hair from the left and cross it over to the right. Continue incorporating new pieces of hair and crossing them over in alternating sections until you reach the back of the crown.
  3. Secure the braid with a bobby pin.
  4. Gather the remaining hair in a ponytail and tie it off with an elastic band.
  5. Take a small piece of hair from the ponytail and wrap it around the band to hide the elastic. Secure it with bobby pins.
  6. Split the ponytail into two equal sections to start the fishtail braid.
  7. Take a small strand from the left section and cross it over to the right section.
  8. Now take a small strand from the right section and cross it over to the left. Continue this pattern until you reach the end of the ponytail.
  9. Tie it off with elastic band. Then, gently pull each stitch and spread it to create fullness.
  10. To finish, spray a firm hold hairspray for a fun filled Fourth of July.
